Xiaomi Mi A2 vs My A1
Xiaomi Mi A2 vs My A1

At the end of 2017 Xiaomi presented what would be one of its most successful models of the year. The Xiaomi Mi A1 arrived without layers of customization, with the pure experience of Android One, and conquered the market beyond China, where it had also become a hit. Now, its sequel ready to repeat the success: the Xiaomi Mi A2.

Today the manufacturer has presented the renewal of its blockbuster phone in Spain, one of the countries that has embraced the previous model more strongly. In principle, these two models come to be carbon copies of the Mi 5X and the Mi 6X, phones that we already know very well and whose difference compared to those presented today is an operating system without MIUI. Let’s see what evolutions the Xiaomi Mi A2 presents with respect to the Mi A1.

The screen gains prominence

The change in the design of the Mi A1 to the Xiaomi Mi A2 that has just been presented is not very revolutionary. In some aspects, however, it becomes quite evident: the new Xiaomi phone does not include a jack connection and its screen is noticeably larger.

Without having to increase the body size too much, the Xiaomi Mi A2 arrives with a few extra inches: from the 5.5 of the previous model we now reach the 5.99 inches that are also accompanied by their mandatory pixels. From Full HD we upload to Full HD + and the new format asks for it.

The Mi A2 updates its screen to give it more height and extra resistance to falls and blows with Gorilla Glass 5

The panel is protected with the Gorilla Glass 5 glass, the highest level of Corning protection until the Gorilla Glass 6 goes into production for the next high-end phones.

Following a trend that we have seen in several new devices this year, Xiaomi’s phone is aimed at the 18: 9 format to abandon the classic 16: 9 that the Xiaomi Mi A1 had presented to us. In terms of dimensions, as we said, only the height has really been affected: this is a telephone 3 millimeters higher but an almost identical weight.

20 MPs arrive in the back and front camera

The great change from one generation to another of this Xiaomi Mi A2 has been experienced in the front camera, which has experienced a major upgrade in terms of resolution. The Mi A1 had presented a sensor for selfies of a simple 5 megapixels, but its successor is much better equipped with its 20 megapixels.

The portrait mode benefits from improvements in photographic processing by artificial intelligence, with better detection of silhouettes and edges of objects even in light conditions that could pose a challenge for cameras with less performance.

The 4 pixels in 1, the so-called Super Pixel that incorporates the 20 MP sensor, also provides great benefits in the amount of light that the sensor can capture and transfer to the final image. That, added to the size of the pixels (2 μm) and the technology “pixel binning” promises high-quality photos even in the darkest scenes.

The bokeh effect has improved in precision thanks to what in Xiaomi called the Semantic Segmentation, an AI- based technology that identifies and separates the background of the object from the image.

The increase in resolution in the front camera is the most noticeable change, but the dual rear system has also evolved. The Mi A1 had two sensors of 12 megapixels each, arranged horizontally and with apertures f / 2.2 and f / 2.6, the second being a wide-angle lens.

The new rear camera of the Mi A2 is presented with a 12 megapixel lens, with a size of 1.25 μm per pixel, but the next is 20 megapixels, too, and a much larger aperture for the two that stands at f /1.75. Much greater light input and higher pixels that, according to Xiaomi, will improve the quality of the cameras by 25%.

The artificial intelligence that includes its photographic processing improves in this edition the portrait mode and, in addition, it arrives with a mode of automatic selection of scenes to adapt to any type of photography with the necessary improvements of color and light for photographs of different depths.

Power slightly increased and a tiny decrease in autonomy

The new Xiaomi Mi A2 comes with the Snapdragon 660 processor, a chip predestined to the 800 range but which Qualcomm ended up deciding to downgrade the 600 series. It is a tall brain that was placed directly in the back of its range.

The performance promised by the processor is 50% higher than what we experienced with the Mi A1 and its Snapdragon 625, but it will also accompany this power increase with the RAM section. The Mi A2 arrives with the same amount, 4 GB of RAM, but it supposes memory of a superior technological quality: from LPDDR3 to the LPDDR4 memory that mounts the Mi A2.

On the other hand, the battery lowers slightly in autonomy for two reasons. If we look at the cold numbers, we find a device that arrives with 3,010 mAh of maximum autonomy, while the previous model came with 3,080 mAh. If we add to this the fact that we have a much larger screen, we can expect less autonomy time for the new model.

You can always expect your Android One status to help: the constant updates from Google always try to pamper the device’s energy efficiency especially and it would be possible for it to play in favor to compensate for the small cut in milliamperes / hour of the Mi A2.

Precisely Xiaomi has referred to the features that thanks to Android P will make the battery is much more protected from inefficiencies, such as the automatic adaptation of improved brightness. With this, Xiaomi has confirmed that the My A2 will be one of the first devices to receive the next Android update.

Three variants, higher price

One of the keys to the success of the Mi A1 was that its good features as a mid-range phone came together with very competitive prices that, as we have seen before, convinced the market and critics.

The new Mi A2 has suffered a price increase which, although not very noticeable, is significant. In addition, the new Xiaomi terminal comes this time in up to three variants. The most complete Xiaomi Mi A2 is accompanied by 2 GB more RAM to reach 6 GB.

The three versions in which the new Xiaomi device comes out are the 4 GB with 32 GB of storage, for 249 euros, the version with 4 GB and 64 GB of storage and, as we mentioned, the most complete version with up to 6 GB of RAM and storage space of 128 GB for 349 euros.

The Mi A2 will arrive in Spanish stores from August 10, distributed in physical and online stores, such as Amazon, El Corte Inglés, MediaMarkt, Worten, PC Components and AliExpress.
