Are there foods that we should eliminate?
Maybe eliminating is not the correct term, but moderating its consumption does. The truth is that each patient must have a personalized diet, but in general terms there are certain foods that should be avoided. Alcohol, caffeine, abuse of fats or foods with lactose, sorbitol and fructose are some examples that often bother our small intestine.
It was the University of Monsah (Australia) that designed the FODMAP diet. Its acronyms correspond to oligosaccharides, disaccharides, fermentable monosaccharides and polyols. It is a diet that avoids fructose, lactose, fructans, galactans and polyols, which we find in:

FODMAP considerably reduces the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, although depending on the person, it may be more or less flexible.
How does a diet for the irritable bowel have to be?
You must be aware that you have a digestive problem and you should help your body as much as possible. The large meals and binge eating are not recommended, so we recommend performing at least five meals a day. This way we will avoid going hungry during the day and we will distribute the food doses.
Experts recommend that the diet focused on irritable bowel should contain foods from all nutritional groups, provided that our digestive doctor recommends it.
- Food builders. Proteins of animal, vegetable and mineral origin (dairy, meat, fish, eggs, legumes and nuts).
- Energy foods. Carbohydrates and healthy fats that provide energy to the body. Whole grains (rice, flour, bread, pasta), vegetables with a high content of carbohydrates (potato or some legumes such as chickpea). Healthy oils would also be included.
- Food regulators. They are the ones that provide vitamins and minerals (vegetables, fruit and vegetables).
Even with these tips, it is important that a dietitian-nutritionist assess your problem and advise you on the foods that best suit your intestinal problem. Of course, any food that you think affects you, you should eliminate it from your diet to avoid having bad times.
