During yesterday we had the opportunity to meet the new Honor 9i and Honor Play. The latter is a mobile with the same Kirin 970 processor that incorporates the Honor 10 or the Huawei P20 Pro. But one of its most striking features is the arrival of GPU Turbo, a new tool from the Chinese manufacturer to expand the graphics power of the GPU.
A feature that promises to increase power by 60% and even improve processor efficiency to save 30% battery. For practical purposes it is an overclock of the GPU to improve its performance.
Something that to date we did not have natively but could be done in a similar way through third-party applications. Now this technology of empowerment reaches the Honor and Huawei, but according to the manufacturer, this improvement will come through an update on all types of devices, not only reserved for the high-end.
Turbo GPU: the overclock reaches the Kirin processors
This GPU Turbo function is designed for games, but also to increase the numerical results of the benchmarks, which are often used erroneously to discern which is more powerful and fluid.
With this move Huawei and Honor want to offer their mobile users more power, mainly for games but also thinking about the augmented and virtual reality that is increasingly present.
In a test with the Honor 9 Youth Edition it was seen that the refresh rate of a game was increased by 77% thanks to this Turbo GPU. In high-end devices it will not be noticed as much, but in mid-range phones it could be a significant enough increase.
Honor phones and Huawei that will receive this update
According to Huawei official sources collected by Gizchina, this GPU Turbo function will not only be in the high range with the Kirin 970. Other processors of the company like the Kirin 960 and the Kirin 659 will also receive the Turbo GPU upgrade.
Specifically, an OTA is expected from August for the following Honor and Huawei devices.
- Huawei Mate series
- Huawei P series
- Honor 10 / V10
- Honor View 10
- Honor 9 / V9
- Honor 9 Lite
- Honor 7X
